About the Flint Castle
As one of the first castles built by King Edward I in his conquest of Wales, Flint Castle plays a huge part in the town’s rich past. The castle is a vital piece of history in the Welsh struggle for independence.
The castle dates back to 1277, built as part of the King’s campaign against Llywelyn the Last. Built with secure features like thick walls and its moat, it is likely that the castle was to be a refuge in case of attack.
The castle was later semi-destroyed in the 1640s by Cromwell’s army, to avoid use in future conflicts. However, there is plenty left to explore and it remains a main attraction for the town.
There are lots of fun Flint Castle facts to discover at the site. For example, Flint Castle is one of Edward I’s ‘Iron Ring’, built to encircle Gwynedd. The castle also features in William Shakespeare’s Richard II, where Richard takes refuge.
