Environmental policy
Avanti West Coast Go Green is the name of our Environment and Energy Strategy designed to reduce our impact on the environment and make a positive difference in the world around us. We’ve adopted a systematic approach to allow us to do the right thing, not only for our customers, but for our partners and our communities. Take a look at our Environment and Energy policy which demonstrates our promise:
Environmental and Energy Policy
ISO 14001 and 50001
Our Environmental plans and objectives are managed through an Environmental Management System (EMS). Our EMS is certified to two international standards, Environmental Management (ISO 14001) and Energy Management (ISO 50001). These certifications demonstrate our commitment and passion to continuous improvement of our environmental performance and reduce our impact on the planet, through energy saving, waste reduction, and sustainable actions.
Waste and Resources
We are committed to achieving a recycling rate of 90% and 0% to landfill as well as increasing the recyclability of our onboard offering. We are aspiring to go one step further and using an enterprising lifecycle approach to turn what in normally considered ‘waste’ into a resource which can benefit our environmental, social, and economic impact.
Green Champions
It's one thing to talk about how much we’re committed to staying as green as possible. But real change comes about from passionate, committed people. That’s why each of our stations has a Green Champion, who works with our local teams to find new and innovative ways to improve our impact on the environment, and make sure we remain a sustainable business.
Water
We are committed to reduce our total water usage by at least 20%, this on top of our already massive saving from installation of AMR’s and proactive leak rectification programme.
Energy
At Avanti West Coast our energy usage comes from 1. Our trains and 2. Our stations. We are making our best effort to reduce the amount of energy we use in both areas. We will be running 23 new trains which will help decrease our carbon emissions massively. We also promote Train Drivers using Eco-driving techniques to reduce energy consumption. We are installing a building management system across all our managed stations to control, monitor and reduce energy consumption as well as installing all LED lights and upgrading boiler systems.
Managing Noise
We have recently developed a strategy setting out how we manage noise pollution. Find out more in our strategy and if you would like to get in touch about this issue, please contact environment@avantiwestcoast.co.uk

Carbon Calculator
Not only are our trains awesome, they’re also one of the greenest ways to go. Use our trusty carbon calculator to compare your train journey with driving and flying to see how much carbon you could save.
On certain journeys you'll spot our carbon indicator showing you how much CO2 you're saving by booking to travel by train rather than plane.
