Getting from Manchester to Crewe by train
Crewe exists as it is because of the railways – before the 1830s it was a tiny hamlet. When it was chosen
as the location for major railway locomotive works, its growth and importance were assured, and it grew incredibly
quickly. Look at a railway map and you’ll see why it’s so perfect – it’s where multiple lines meet, and it made it
the ideal place for passengers to change trains in the middle of England, wherever they were coming from or going
to.
The railway works have mostly gone now, but the town remains bustling. It’s a market town of more than 70,000, with
industry and commerce thriving. Its status as a great railway connection also holds true, and it’s why millions of
passengers know the station so well.

Travelling from Manchester?
Manchester Piccadilly is one of the three main stations in Manchester, located just to the east of the city centre,
close to the Mancunian Way. If you’re in the city, it’s straightforward to reach – head to Piccadilly Gardens and
follow Fairfield Street until you see the ramp sloping up on your left. Go up the slope and you’re there.
If you’re coming from a little further afield, your journey to the station will probably be covered by Transport for Greater Manchester. That means you can use the official website to
find information on buses, local trains and the Metrolink tram network that covers a huge area from Manchester
Airport to Bury, Rochdale, Ashton and Altrincham. There are also thousands of taxis to hail or book in the city.
Travelling from Crewe?
Crewe Station is right in the middle of town, and as it’s not a huge place, you’ll never be far from it. Just like
the train lines, all roads lead to Nantwich Road, and there’s a generous car park next to the station if you’re
driving. If you’re taking public transport, have a look at the Cheshire East website,
as that’s the local authority that covers Crewe.
As well as being a temporary stop-off for those changing trains, you might be visiting the town to meet friends or
family who live here. With all the industry in the area, it’s also likely you’re coming on business, so good luck
with that deal! While you’re here, pop into the Lyceum Theatre or explore the railway heritage centre, where you’ll
find a miniature railway - a truly great day out.
First Class service
Both Manchester Piccadilly and Crewe Station have First Class Lounges that are exclusively for Avanti West Coast
travellers with a First Class ticket. You can turn up as much as 2 hours before your departure time, and you’ll find
comfy designer seats, drinks and snacks, as well as complimentary WiFi to catch up with business or
entertainment while you’re waiting for your train.
