What's on

Coventry – Romeo & Juliet, The Belgrade Theatre (21 Feb – 8 March)

Immerse yourself in the new era of Shakespeare theatre production and see ‘Romeo and Juliet at The Belgrade Theatre in Coventry. Everything that makes Shakespeare’s play so well loved is here; the rich, feuding families, the intense, forbidden passion and the flash of violence that tears the young lovers apart, sending them spiralling towards tragedy. This is unmistakeably Shakespeare’s love story, unaltered in its original text. But it’s not just Shakespeare’s play. There is an important Plus One: rap.

The new production shines with new, original elements of rap – as well as soul and R&B. Think everyday English as well as the Elizabethan variety. And the poetry of rap rhythms as well as perfect pentameters.

Romeo and Juliet is a co-production with Bristol Old Vic and Hackney Empire. Directed by Corey Campbell, creative director of the Belgrade, the play springs from our communities. The music elements reflect a collaboration with new company, That’s a Rap. The theatre have worked with local young people who have been taken out of mainstream education, on the production. Together, they’ve created something unique. A Shakespearean lyrical love story – for people who love the music of the spoken word of every generation. We know we like it!

Learn what the Director, Corey Campbell says about the production.

Win! This February, you will have a chance to win a pair of tickets to the performance and an overnight stay including breakfast at the Ramada Hotel & Suites by Wyndham Coventry for two with travel to Coventry from anywhere on the Avanti West Coast network – the ultimate Valentine’s gift. Visit @AvantiWestCoast Instagram page to enter for your chance to win.

Siena: The Rise of Painting 1300-1350” exhibition, National Gallery (8 March – 22 June)

Step into Siena. It’s the beginning of the 14th century in central Italy.
A golden moment for art, a catalyst of change. Artists Duccio, Simone Martini and the brothers Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti are forging a new way of painting. They paint with a drama that no one has seen before. Faces show emotion. Bodies move in space. Stories flow across panels in colourful scenes.
We bring to life a vibrant city of artists collaborating, learning and looking. After centuries of separation, we reunite scenes that once formed part of Duccio’s monumental 'Maestà' altarpiece.
Panels from Simone Martini’s glittering Orsini polyptych come together for the first time in living memory. This local artistic phenomenon made waves internationally. Gilded glass, illuminated manuscripts, ivory Madonnas, rugs and silks show Siena’s creative energy spilling over between painters, metalworkers, weavers and carvers across Europe.
With over a hundred exhibits made by artisans working in Siena, Naples, Avignon and beyond, see some of Europe's earliest, most exquisite and most significant artworks.
