Trains to Lichfield

How to get there, what to do and how to get home with Avanti West Coast.

Just north of Rugby, the west Coast Mainline splits in two, heading west to Birmingham and north-west towards Stoke-on-Trent. Lichfield is on the eastern line and is served by Lichfield Trent Valley Station. As cities go, Lichfield is pretty small, with a population of around 30,000, but that small area is packed with historical treasures, from the grand cathedral to the hundreds of small listed buildings. The Staffordshire Hoard, a more literal treasure, was found here in 2009; it’s gold and silver riches point to a past when Lichfield was a very important place indeed in Anglo-Saxon England.

Things to do in Lichfield

You can’t visit Lichfield without seeing the beautiful cathedral right in the heart of the city, so you may as well complete your trip by going inside. Started in around the year 700, it has been a permanent fixture throughout the birth of what we now call England, surviving Viking invasion, civil war and world wars, yet still standing proud to this day. So pay it a visit and admire the architecture and the amazing story that surrounds it.

If you crave something a little more thrilling, you can take a day trip to Drayton Manor just down the road in Tamworth. It’s a small but perfectly formed theme park, with rides galore to get your pulse up. Kids will love Thomas Land, a shrine to the world’s favourite talking tank engine, which is within the grounds. And you’ll also find plenty of places to relax and grab a bite to eat between thrills.

Beacon Park is just next to the cathedral and is a place to chill out and indulge in some lighter entertainment. You can have a game of mini-golf or bowls, and kids will love the play area too. The other side of the cathedral is Stowe Pool, an old mill pond and local fishery that’s now a beautiful nature area. So whatever takes your fancy, you’ll find something to do in or around Lichfield.
