Located in Staffordshire, with the Warwickshire border wrapping around its south-eastern edge, Tamworth is a pleasant market town and one of Birmingham’s main commuter towns. It’s on the eastern branch of the West Coast Mainline that bypasses Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton. What was once a relatively small market town has grown in importance since the arrival of the railways in the 19th century and is now home to around 75,000 residents.
It draws plenty of visitors to its indoor snow dome, one of a handful of real snow slopes in the UK, and it’s also home to Drayton Manor theme park. Whatever thrills you’re looking for, you’ll find them here. As well as modern attractions, the town has quite a history and was once the capital of the kingdom of Mercia. More recently, it was home to Reliant, the company behind the famous Robin and the Regal, immortalised by the Trotter brothers in Only Fools and Horses. Sadly, the factory closed down in 2001, but it’s fondly remembered by locals.
