Getting from London Euston to Lancaster by train

Within three to four hours, you can travel from the UK’s capital to one of history’s most significant cities, Lancaster.

It's here that the House of Lancaster was based in the Middle Ages, but its story goes back to the Romans. The castle was built on the site of the fort and has been upgraded and altered many times.

For a relatively inland town, you might also be surprised to learn it also has a port. Just like London, it has a navigable river that provided a safe harbour for ships to ply their trade. You can find out about this side of its history in the Maritime Museum.

In modern times, it’s a thriving university city, with an abundance of industry and commerce. Since it’s right between the Forest of Bowland and Morecambe Bay, there are plenty of days out within 20 and 40 minute drives.

Travelling from Lancaster?

Lancaster’s railway station is relatively modest, found in the heart of town, a stone’s throw from the castle. You can access the platforms from either side of the tracks. This means the main Station Road entrance is just off Westbourne Road, or accessible via the East entrance near the Quaker House.

Throughout the day, you can visit the castle and museum, as well as the beautiful Lancaster Priory. There’s also a thriving nightlife, with plenty of bars and restaurants to check out, partly thanks to the fact there’s a major university here.

If you’re here for a day or two, there’s Morecambe nearby, featuring the Morecambe Bay.
